Darth Maul (2017) #1-Corusant Comics Review

Starting with the Darth Maul series, we will be reviewing and analyzing Star Wars comic series. If you have any requests, make sure to leave a comment below! Starting with Comic number one... Darth Maul (2017) #1

First off, after his 'death' in the Phantom Menace and his return in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Darth Maul has become my favorite Sith of all time. I've been hungry for more bits of information about Maul and this will supply it. I'm glad to have this series and I'm glad to be to review it here.

When I first started reading the comic, I was a little thrown off. Instead of immediately starting with Darth Maul, we get a conversation with a group of big-game hunters. Suddenly a Rathar appears from above. Rathars are definitely cool, but their appearance in the Force Awakens was kind of strange. Although the entrance of Darth Maul definitely was awesome. Instead of wielding his double bladed lightsaber, Maul holds a pike-type weapon that he uses with skill. For Hunger Games fans, you can compare it to Finnick and a trident. The Rathar starts eating the hunters one-by-one, even leaving just the feet of one. Darth Maul quickly ends their reign of terror, even when more show up. Not having that many lines in The Phantom Menace, the narration of Maul's thoughts are very well done.

Back on Coruscant, Maul hides in an alleyway while a Jedi and her padawan walk towards him. Maul grips his lightsaber in longing for a confrontation with the Jedi. He leaves, but cannot deny the feelings he has.

Here we go with Sidious. Maul tells Sidious about his bloodlust against the Jedi. Of course he tells Sidious he is ready, but Sidious replies that Sidious himself is not. He tells Maul that he is disobeying his boundaries, testing himself with the Jedi. Sidious tells him that if he keeps disobeying him that "it will not be a Jedi who casts him down". To quench his thirst Sidious sends him on a mission to aid the Trade Federation at their secret mining centers which have been attacked by pirates. Is it just me or is the pirates thing getting old? It seems like pirates are a common villain now for anything. Maul tells him it will be well taken care of, and Sidious replies "What else would I expect?" showing once agian his authority over Maul.

When Maul arrived his entrance was very nice. Slashing his lightsabers against pirates and killing some Federation officials who seemed to be getting in the way of his rampage. One pirated ended up surviving and tried to barter his life for some information for the lightsaber wielding 'Jedi'. He told Maul that Xen Xrexus had captured a Jedi Padawan and was going to give it to the highest bidder in an auction. Maul seems instrested in this, but when the pirate runs out of information Maul quickly disposes of him. The Federation thank Maul for saving them and for uncovering information about the Padawan auction which Sidious would reward 'them' greatly for. Maul obviously not allowing his master to learn of the auction, and to quench his bloodlust says this: "A pity...the pirates killed everyone on board before I arrived." Of course once you see this dialogue you can foresee the outcome. Maul quickly executes the Trade Federation official.

Knowing the Padawan is a representation of everything he hates about the Jedi, and the fact that the Jedi will try to rescue her, Darth Maul says "I will get there first!"

I honestly think this is a great start to the series. Darth Maul has a great representation and story in this series. The adventures to come are just beginning. Will he get the Padawan? Will he run in with more Jedi? Will Darth Sidious find out about his disobedience? We will know more...as the story continues.
